Magnets and Their Applications

Any object that produces a magnetic field is a magnet, magnets can either be strong or soft; a soft magnet is the one which loses its quality soon after the process of magnetism is finished, it helps to enhance the magnetic field in the wire through which an electric current is passing whereas a strong magnet is the one which never loses its magnetic quality as remains magnetized for a long time and is used to cling notes on refrigerator doors. Types of permanent magnets are ceramic, alnico, flexible, samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets and Neodymium magnets.

Ceramic commonly known as ferrite is composed by iron oxide and barium and strontium carbonate and these compositing elements make it available at low cost, ferrite is usually applicable in DC brushless motors, in lawnmowers, they most widely used magnets due to their good magnetic strength for a long period. Samarium cobalt magnets are very fragile but at the same time very powerful magnetically, they can withstand the temperature at 300° C as so are useful at places where high temperature is critical but they are price sensitive for samarium and cobalt are expensive materials, these magnets are used in military use satellite systems and in computer disc drives and wave tubes as well.

Neodymium magnet is another unique and rare type of magnets and its applications can be seen in speakers, magnetic separators and servo motors; they are good in ambient temperature situations and are more economical than Samarium Cobalt magnets but still expensive enough to used in a friendly fashion. Groomed in their magnetic power aided by more metals to work in amore efficient manner, Alnico magnets made up of aluminum, nickel and cobalt, its applications can be viewed communication appliances like receivers, microphones, musical instruments like guitar, electron tubes, coin acceptors, instruments, clutches for their resistance of demagnetizing process.

Magnets need your attention to care for, Samarium Cobalt magnets are highly strong and if used in an idle and careless way can pinch the fingers between them, Alnico magnets can lose their magnetism if dropped, but having the advantage of being re_ magnetized, they can restore their magnetism just in few minutes. Cow magnets are used by farmers and vets to prevent and cure Hardware Disease in which cows tend to reduce their appetite and give low output of milk.

Magnets are used in multiple devices and instruments according to the nature of job and application they are doing; in magnetic recording media as cassettes, floppy disks and hard disks magnets are used to record data on a magnetic coating. Credit cards, ATM cards have a magnetic strip on their one side, they are also employed in numerous toys of children, clasps of many ornaments are made up of magnets, they can pick up magnetic objects like nails, paper clips etc.

All the permanent magnets are used in various devices to produce the flux in the working crevice of a device, so it depends on the efficiency of the magnet used in the device to produce the required amount of flux generated in the device during the application process. Permanent magnets are found naturally in stones and are manufactured as well.
