Unlike a hand tool, a power tool is a device powered by an electric motor or a gasoline engine run by petrol or gas. Steam engine was the first prime source of power and the lathe has been considered the oldest power tool used by the antediluvian Egyptians. During the era of industrial revolution in Europe the power tools were driven by belts but in the 1880s the introduction of the electric motor brought about a revolution and significant change in the world of industry for power tools driven by electric motor had changed the whole scenario of industry. It is also interesting to note that after the introduction of electric motor Man has never seized to go ahead on the way of progress as electric motor made it possible for him to introduce thousand of power tools for the convenience of his work.

Power tools are particularly divided into two main groups; portable power tools and stationary power tools. Both types of tools are usually driven by electric motor which has been regarded the universal power source for all types of power tools but there are some exceptions as the outdoor tools like chain saws and weed whackers are powered by gasoline engine and there are tools powered by explosive cartridges whereas portable power tools may be driven by batteries. Power tools, be it portable or stationary are used in construction, in industry for various purposes like polishing, sanding, painting, drilling, shaping etc. they at one hand make the task easy to accomplish in a jiffy of time, provide accuracy and exactness to work done by you for they work in a straighter, smoother and in a more reliable way for you.
